A Coruna's Hercules Tower (Galicia)
It's quite magnificent, no wonder the locals are proud of Hercules Tower. For starters, it was built by the Romans more than two thousand years ago and is the world's oldest functioning light house. images (c) Gilly Pickup
As you can see from the photos above, views from the top are far-reaching - worth climbing the 234 steps to the top!
Interesting fact: When Queen Isabel 11 paid a visit here in 1858 it was decided that the interior of the Tower should be embellished. False dividing walls were installed to cover the original walls and fabrics used to cover the inner walls. Even false ceilings were installed to cover the less attractive bits.
Interesting fact: Pablo Picasso lived for a few years in A Coruna when he was a boy and did a painting of the Tower. The story goes that he called it the 'caramel tower'.
The Tower and surrounding Sculpture Park were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.
