Plymouth Rocks
The National Marine Aquarium, Britain’s largest, is a registered charity committed to conservation, research and educational programmes. Areas include the ‘Atlantic Ocean’ display, an enormous tank holding 2.5 million litres of water with a diverse community of animals found in the warmer waters of the Western Atlantic. Walk-through glass arches enable visitors to see rays, sharks and fish in an explosion of rainbow colours swimming above and below them. Look out for Snorkel too, a loggerhead turtle rescued from a Cornish beach some years ago. Her ill health and bad eyesight meant she couldn’t be released back into the wild so now she is looked after here.
Hop on a water taxi from The Barbican to Royal William Yard. This early 19th century food and victualling yard, now one of the city's trendiest areas, supplied Royal Navy ships.. It spills over with waterfront cafes and restaurants including the River Cottage Canteen and Prezzo restaurant with outdoor seating area overlooking the marina. There are plenty of opportunities to take boat trips here, whether you prefer a relaxed harbour cruise with informative commentary, a ferry ride to explore Cornish villages, or a floating tour of Drake’s Island, the Naval Dockyards and River Tamar.
Did You Know? The 72 foot high red and white candy stripe Smeaton's Tower lighthouse offers king-of-the-world views of Plymouth Sound and the city from its lantern room. Open to the public all year (except Christmas Day and Good Friday)
