Germany's witches festival
Germany's Harz Mountain region is associated with witches and the devil. Well, it's probably no wonder because it is definitely a scary landscape with weird rock formations such as the 'Witches Altar' and 'Devil's Pulpit'. The mountain called the Brocken has a mysterious summit, made even more spooky by the fact it is often swathed in mist and it is here, so legend has it, that witches gather on Walpurgis Night to dance around fires and worship the devil who bestows more magic powers onto them.
Walpurgisnacht is on April 30th. German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe used the Brocken as the scene of Walpurgis Night in his play Faust. Faust is a scholar who makes a deal with the devil and exchanges his soul for worldly knowledge and pleasures. Although mentioned in previous German texts, it was Goethe's writings that inspired what is one of the biggest events in Harz.
